Syracuse Extends Life of Swimming Teams

University to Allow Swimmers to Complete their Athletic Careers

Roanoke, Virginia -- In a press release dated January 15, 2008, Syracuse University announced a reprieve for its swimming and diving team, which Syracuse had announced it would eliminate in the 2008-09 academic year. Equity in Athletics, Inc. ("EIA") has been working with Save Syracuse Swimming, a coalition of collegiate swimming organizations and Syracuse parents, alumni, and students, to reverse the swimming cuts.

Phil Whitten, a member of EIA's board of directors and the Executive Director of the College Swimming Coaches Association of America, is leading EIA's efforts to help save the Syracuse swimming and diving team. Larry Joseph, an attorney for EIA, serves on Save Syracuse Swimming's advisory board. In a letter dated August 15, 2007, EIA advised Syracuse University that its planned cuts violate Title IX.
